Could it be true? According to an anonymous source (via Eurogamer), Nintendo plans to launch a SNES Mini console (or, in Nintendo’s current branding, the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) this holiday—in fact, this source claims it’s already in development.
This may be a telling reason as to why the NES Classic was discontinued in North America (and later worldwide), which makes sense. Last week, Nintendo explained it never meant for the NES Classic to be a permanent product, so this makes sense—as well as an indication that we may be seeing more classic consoles to come. What might be next? GameBoy Classic? N64 Classic?
With all this talk of Nintendo replicating its classic gaming consoles, what could this mean for the possibility (or lack thereof) of ever getting Virtual Console on Switch? Either way, if this report proves true, let’s hope the stock and availability this time around will fare better than did the NES Classic.
Nintendo declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer.
