Cheers to a successful launch! According to a Nintendo press release (via Business Wire), Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling video game console in Nintendo history, selling over 906,000 units in the US during the month of March, according to NPD. Not only is this the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history, but it’s one of the fastest-selling systems of all time, during what Nintendo considers a “nontraditional month for a console launch.”
Also of note are the sales numbers for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which sold more than 1.3 million units—925,000 for Switch and 460,000 for Wii U. This means Nintendo sold more copies of Breath of the Wild for Switch than they did Switch consoles, though this is likely attributed to people who purchased both the Master Edition as well as a second copy for normal play. This made Breath of the Wild the fastest-selling Nintendo launch game of all time, and thereby the fastest-selling Legend of Zelda title to date.
This is all fantastic news, especially when considering the fact there is still high demand for Switch consoles and an exceedingly high consumer base still waiting to get their hands on their own. What do you think of these sales numbers? Are you surprised the Switch launch beat out the Wii’s? Do you think the Switch may topple the Wii in lifetime sales? Let us know by leaving a reply!
