Wahoo! Nintendo has announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch sold 459,000 units—that’s nearly half a million—on its launch day alone, making Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the fastest-selling entry in Mario Kart series history. This includes both physical and digital sales in the US.
To put this in perspective, Mario Kart Wii, the previous record holder, sold approximately 433,900 when it launched in 2008. Mario Kart 8 on Wii U sold 1.2 million units across the US, Europe, and Japan during its entire launch weekend, so I think it’s safe to say Deluxe is well on its way to outselling its younger sibling on Wii U.
The sales numbers for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe equate to an attach rate of 45 percent, meaning nearly one in every two Switch owners picked up a copy on release day.
I think this is fantastic news for both Nintendo and we as gamers. I owned Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, but never really played it because either none of my friends owned a Wii U, the game, or both. Now that I have multiple friends with Switch consoles and a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I’ll always have friends online to play with. Moreover, it’s great to see communities pop up everywhere for this game, so there should be no shortage of people to race with.
